Thanks for your inquiry about hunting with Western Lands Hunting Company. We want to give you an update on the 2006 season.
In the spring, we took 25 hunters to Texas for hogs and turkeys. Each of the hunters could kill unlimited hogs and two turkeys. The hunters averaged close to the limit of two birds and most killed at least one hog. It was a great time and fun to get out of the colder weather.
We had a good summer on the Utah/Idaho/Wyoming ranches with the only hot times occurring the end of July where we had a couple of weeks over 100 degrees F. Most of our ranches had plenty of water and the feed was good. When the hunting season finally started, the weather was wet throughout most the hunts.
We began hunting trophy mule deer the 11th of September. The first deer we killed was a 28" buck the grossed 197". It was one we had been watching for three years. A few days later, we killed a 29 3/4" wide buck. The last day of this hunt, we killed our third buck and it was another record book typical. This deer grossed over 200". It was harvested in a heavy downpour of rain.
The following week, the bad weather continued and we had three trophy deer hunters in camp. These hunters had only one and half days of good weather in five. They still got their deer. Two of the bucks scored 180" and one scored 187".
The first week of October another two big bucks hit the ground. One scored 195 and the other grossed over 206". The 206" inch buck has a 12" in-line on the right side.
At the end of October, the remaining trophy mule deer hunters showed up. We killed a 196 gross non-typical that was 30" wide and a 200 plus non-typical buck. Both of these hunters have hunted with us for at least three years. One hunter has a 199 gross average on three deer and the other has a 202 gross average on three deer. The last of our trophy tags went unfilled. He was waiting for the perfect deer and we found one that would gross close to 220, but never got the opportunity to harvest him.
After we had concluded with all the trophy mule deer hunters, our results were as follows: the average spread was 29" with a gross score of 197 B&C for the top eight bucks. That gives us an average score just over 201" for trophy bucks taken in the last four years.
The moose hunts started the end of September. We had two hunters with permits. Both hunters harvested animals. This hunt was tougher than previous years. We had several big bulls found and they disappeared during the hunt. We did find a couple of trophies only to have a hunter miss and the other bull was standing 100 yards over the property line. Oh well, that is hunting!
When October rolled around we started hunting elk. The average bull taken was a nice 6x6 that would score a little over 300" B&C. Our overall success rate was 88%. We had two archers that were not successful.
Our 2007 bookings are going very well and openings are limited. See the 2007 hunt dates for availability. Please contact us if you have any questions.
